How to choose vocabulary words for word games

Start with the words your group needs to use, then choose a game that gives those words a clear job.

Made with the words and settings shown here.

Start with a purpose, not a longer list

Choose one text, conversation or topic that your group will return to. Ask what learners need to say, read or explain after the activity. A short list that you can introduce and revisit is easier to teach deliberately than a large collection of vaguely related words. There is no single word count that suits every group.

IES recommends teaching a set of vocabulary words in depth across several days and activities. A word search can rehearse recognition of a written form; it does not, on its own, show that someone understands the meaning. Add a spoken explanation, an example or a sentence before and after the puzzle.

QuestionKeep or change it?Weather example
Will we use it in the next task?Keep words that help explain the topic. Put unrelated extras aside.Keep cloud when discussing the sky; save telescope for a different activity.
Can I explain the intended meaning?Prepare a short definition, picture, action or real object. Check words with multiple meanings. Here, hail means small balls of ice falling from clouds, not calling someone.
Can the group distinguish it from the others?Teach contrasts before asking learners to choose between them.Explain that thunder is a sound and lightning is a flash.
Is the spelling appropriate for this group?Check the spelling you intend to teach, including spaces and accents.rain is short; lightning needs more careful spelling practice.
Will it work in the chosen game?Check normalized length, omissions and minimum bingo word counts.Eight words fill a 3 × 3 card with a free center.

Try an eight-word weather list

Use rain, snow, hail, fog, cloud, wind, thunder and lightning. Before printing, ask the group to point to a picture, make a movement or explain one contrast. For a first search, use Across + down and keep the matching answer page. The example uses a 12 × 12 grid; this is a starting layout to inspect, not an age or reading-level recommendation.

Vanderbilt IRIS suggests connecting vocabulary to examples, pictures, actions and familiar experiences. Choose the support your group needs. For learners who are still meeting the words, read the word and show its meaning together before switching to clues.

Use eight ready-to-read weather clues

Check the list after the activity

Keep a note of the words the group could explain and the ones that needed support. Ask each learner to use two words in a short observation, such as “I heard thunder after I saw lightning.” Revisit a few words in a later reading or conversation. Completing a page quickly is not a vocabulary assessment.

When a word is rejected or omitted, fix the list or settings rather than silently treating the smaller output as complete. Check the preview and answer sheet for unintended letter combinations before sharing. Personal names and sensitive information are unnecessary for a topic word list.

Check input rules, spaces, accents and duplicate words
